My Beginning
Since childhood, stories have always captivated me. My imagination, curiosity, and desire to solve problems naturally led me to be creative so, as a teenager and young adult, I transitioned from being a listener and reader of stories to a storyteller and "closet" writer. Ideas for stories have swirled around in my mind for as long as I can remember and because I am self-motivated, I would jot down my thoughts and half-written story notes in notebooks, telling myself, "I'll get around to them someday."
My Revelation
My “someday” did not come for a very long time. I graduated from high school and college without looking at those notes and notebooks. So, I collected them, put them in a box, and put that box in the back of my bedroom closet. It was soon forgotten because "life happens." It wasn't until I attended graduate school that I envisioned the idea for this book, "The Greatest Gift."
I got the idea for the book after experiencing a difficult period during graduate school. During that struggle, I began to reflect and pray about what truly mattered in life. I started counting my blessings and my most important realization was that I had always been loved!
I was inspired and focused on writing the "The Greatest Gift" manuscript. I wrote it in a very short time. It helped me refocus and I continued with my education. In the back of my mind, my "someday" was redefined as completing and then publishing the “The Greatest Gift” book after graduation.
Well, I didn’t move forward with the "The Greatest Gift" manuscript after graduation. Instead, I married and started a wonderful family, making them my priority. Over time, I tried to pick up the manuscript again, but life events continued to be my priority. Frustrated, I put the "The Greatest Gift" manuscript, notes, and research materials back in that same box, hoping to find more time later.
While sorting through my storage space about six years ago, I came across that box again! I was shocked at how much work I had done beyond the "The Greatest Gift" manuscript. So, I read through my notes and research and prayed for guidance to even start working on the book again. After receiving confirmation that I should proceed, I committed to finishing the book, and dove into more self-publishing research. Determined, I set out to get this book written, illustrated, and published, no matter what came my way.
So I am finally here, very thankful, grateful, and blessed to see my first book come to life! This experience has shown me how much I love storytelling and how eager I am to share my imaginative ideas once in the corner of my closet, in a forgotten box. I cannot wait to start writing my next book! I hope you will join me on this journey.
EUDORA'S NAME
After I finished the “The Greatest Gift” manuscript, I shared it with a select group of people. They had questions, but the most frequent one was about the main character’s name -“Eudora.” They asked how and why I chose this name for her.
Sometimes, a name will stay with me because I like its sound and how it makes me feel when I hear or say it. I love old names, uncommon names in this modern time. Eventually, I will become curious enough to look up the meaning of the name, which is important to me. I have heard the name Eudora several times over the years and have always liked it.
Originally, the main character had a different name, but about six years ago, I heard the name “Eudora” again. I knew it was perfect for the lovely little girl who would be my book’s main character. Additionally, my daughter loved the character and TV show “Dora the Explorer.” So, to honor my daughter and because I loved the name, I chose “Eudora” for my main character. The name fits her personality and her heart.
Eudora means “excellent gift” or “good gift.”
